Vehicle Excise Duty — cars registered on or after 1 April 2025
For cars registered from 1 April 2025, the following rates will apply.

- A car propelled solely by diesel which does not meet the Real Driving Equivalent (RDE) Step 2
standard will be subject to a first year rate equivalent to the band above the actual emissions of
the car, up to the maximum of £5,490. There is no alternative fuel discount available for any car
from April 2025, regardless of when it was first registered.
- All cars, including those with zero emissions, with a list price greater than £40,000 when new will
be subject to an annual £425 supplement on top of the standard rate for the first 5 years.
- Standard rate in 2024/25 for cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2024 was £190;
electric cars registered in this period were exempt from the standard rate.
- Electric cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2024 were exempt from the first year
rate.
- First year rate in 2024/25 for cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2024 was £10,
subject to the alternative fuel discount of £10 for alternatively powered cars.
- First year rate in 2024/25 for cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2024 was £30,
subject to the alternative fuel discount of £10 for alternatively powered cars.
- First year rate in 2024/25 for cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2024 was £130,
subject to the alternative fuel discount of £10 for alternatively powered cars.
- First year rate in 2024/25 for cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2024 was half the
amount to be charged in 2025/26, subject to the alternative fuel discount of £10 for alternatively
powered cars.
